Buntu introduces direct mobile money payments at checkout

Customers can now pay for orders directly from their phones, with each payment confirmed by the customer on their own device.
KIGALI, August 27, 2026 //Buntu has introduced direct mobile money payments at checkout, allowing customers to pay for orders from their phones without a bank card or a separate account. The integration supports [mobile money operators], which together account for the large majority of digital payments in Rwanda.
When a customer places an order, a payment request is sent to their phone. The customer reviews the amount and confirms the payment with their PIN on their own device. The PIN is never shared with Buntu, and no payment is taken without the customer's approval.
"Mobile money is already how most of our customers pay for everyday purchases, so it was a natural place to start," says a Buntu spokesperson. "Our aim is for payment to be the simplest part of an order. The customer sees the full amount, including delivery, before they confirm, and the request comes to a device they already trust."
The full order total, including the delivery fee, is displayed before payment, so the amount confirmed on the phone always matches the amount shown in the shop. Where a payment fails or is duplicated because of a network interruption, Buntu reconciles the transaction against the order and contacts the customer to resolve it.
The company will continue to work with Rwanda's mobile money operators to improve the speed and reliability of payments.
